Author/Illustrator Visits

“Thank you for visiting our classroom this school year. You were wonderful and your presentation correlated directly with the concepts we teach in our first grade reading and writing programs, plus the children had a wonderful time.”               Sue Short, Honesdale Elementary

K- 2nd grade:
Before reading WHO WANTS BROCCOLI? to the students, Val shares how Broccoli became a book, and talks about the importance of considering big, fun dogs when adding a new pet to a family. Her presentation includes a matching game sheet and drawing activity page, which is provided electronically. Val ends her visit with a drawing session with students ‘helping’ to dress Broccoli in a seasonally appropriate outfit.

Preorders for books can be arranged prior to the event and Val can sign books during her visit, which can be handed out by teachers/reading specialist to students after their program.

3rd – 5th grade:
This program is for older students and goes deeper into writing, revising and publishing picture books, then brings more information on the subject of adopting and rescuing older pets. Material is honest but not disturbing and is followed by Q&A. Val gives students the option to have Who Wants Broccoli? read to them at end of presentation, (which has yet to be turned down :).

When partnered with K-2nd grade visit, this is a nice opportunity for elementary schools to collect pet food for donation to their local rescue/shelter and perhaps arrange visit with volunteers with pets available for adoption.

Book orders can be arranged prior to event and books can be signed by Val for handout by teachers/reading specialist.
